THE GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE OF NUEVO AMANECER

The governance structure of Nuevo Amanecer is composed of a General Assembly, five Coop Councils, and a Grand Council.

The General Assembly
Each family in Nuevo Amanecer has a representative on the General Assembly. The General Assembly is the coop's ultimate authority.

The Five Coop Councils
The five coops that constitute Nuevo Amanecer vary in size:

  • Coop #1 (medical service workers) has 33 families;
  • Coop #2 (textile workers) has 54 families;
  • Coop #3 (church affiliation) has 63 families;
  • Coop #4 (metallurgy workers) has 118 families;
  • Coop #5 (textile workers) has 155 families.

Each of these coops has its own Council. Council members are elected for a two-year term and meet once a week. Each Council has an executive committee, a finance committee, and a development committee.

Each of the five coops also has its own general assembly attended by one representative from each family.

The Grand Council
The Grand Council consists of proportionate representation from each of the five Coop Councils. Coop #2 with 54 families, for example, is eligible to send up to five representatives to the Grand Council. There are about 30 people in total on the Grand Council and they meet once a month.
