THE PHYSICAL FEATURES OF NUEVO AMANECER

The physical construction of Nuevo Amanecer included infrastructure essentials such as roads, sidewalks, water and electrical systems, sewage disposal, and green spaces.

Different types of accommodation were constructed-buildings such as two-storey row houses for households with children, ground floor apartments for older members with mobility problems, and so on. Typically, each two-bedroom home measures about 70 square metres.

Also constructed were buildings to accommodate a number of social services-a small library and cultural centre, a seniors' centre, a medical clinic, a crèche, a kindergarten, a primary school, and a communal workshop/tool shed. More recently a police kiosk has been added.

A communal meeting hall was constructed, as was office space for each of the five cooperatives that constitute Nuevo Amanecer.

Space for several small commercial enterprises was developed, including space for convenience stores, a beauty salon, and an automotive shop. More recently an internet café has opened.

Finally, members of Nuevo Amanecer constructed an outdoor basketball court, a volleyball court, a soccer field, a bocce court, and an outdoor play area for children. (Since the picture below was taken the children's play area has been developed into an adventure playground with an impressive array of climbing, swinging and sliding equipment.)

In early 1975, a mere two years after construction had begun, families began to move into their homes. Electricity was not installed until the end of that year.
